This painting is a tribute to all who, like my own sons, love the adventures of outdoor life. It grew out of a U.S. ex military water canteen belonging to an artist friend. The canteen reminded me of a rather crusty old farmer in an oil skin coat. – the sort who spent years breaking in the land and enjoyed defending his precious turf against all comers, wild pigs included. My wife’s grandfather was such a pioneer. The field glasses belonged to him, as did the 1898 Lee Enfield rifle from which came the bolt and ammunition magazine. The copy of “Field and Stream” is an American publication which dates back to 1948. The old scotch chest lives in our home, patiently waiting for the day when I get round to fixing one of it’s wooden drawer knobs.
