There are no hidden meanings in this painting. - Just a large slice of nostalgia. A treadle sewing machine was the pride and joy of many a pioneer woman. It was used to clothe the family, sew up the drapes, spreads and covers that made a home complete. This sewing machine belonged to my wife’s grandmother. For years it stood at the entrance to my studio. I would gaze at the intricately veneered timber, the solid grace of it’s working parts… Very slowly, the idea of a painting was born. The seamstress doll started out as a small corked jar filled with little reels of cotton. She has a little pair of scissors at her side. Her hat doubles as a pin cushion. The quilt is the handiwork of a good friend.
